Steiff's 1948 Replica Teddy Bear is a wonderful, fascinating insight into the years of austerity after the Second World War. Shortages in the usual materials meant that Steiff designers had to be creative with the fabrics they used to make their bears.This bear is a little piece of history!
This teddy bear is made from blond alpaca (instead of the more common mohair) - a plush that is prized today for it's warm, luxurious feel! Wool was generally scarce post-war so, instead of wool felt, the paw pads are made from woven cotton. Like the original, he has glass eyes and is stuffed with excelsior wood wool, with a squeaker in his tummy.
1948 Replica Teddy Bear is delivered in a Steiff gift box with numbered certificate of authenticity. He bears an under-scored button in ear of patinated steel, with the black & white label exclusive to Steiff replicas.
